Description: Lot of 100 pieces of vintage old authentic military imperial Ethiopian army uniform buttons made by Gaunt of London. These likely date to mid-century. They are domed metal with a metal shank and are marked GAUNT LONDON on the back. They have not been cleaned or polished and are in 'as found' condition with a rich chestnut patina. They are dusty. I have owned this string of buttons for over 15 years and never used them, I purchased them from a vendor dealing in authentic African goods. The design is the stylized Ethiopian shield with crossed spear/arrow and rifle, representing strength and sovereignty. And is a design used in Ethiopian defense. Haile Selassie, aka "The Lion of Judah", ruled the Empire of Ethiopia from 1930 - 1974. The buttons measure just over an inch or 25 mm in diameter. J R Gaunt & Son established in Birmingham in 1884 by James Richard Gaunt and son Charles Frederick Gaunt specialized in manufacturing military and uniform buttons. They opened offices in London in 1905.
