Description: Obverse : "à DANTON / LA VILLE DE PARIS", signed by Auguste Paris sculpteur, engraved by V. JanvierReverse : "inauguration du monument de Danton / 14 juillet MDCCCLXXXXI"Diameter : 50 mm or 2 inchesWeight : 55 gramsMetal : bronzeThe Monument to Danton is a bronze sculptural group made by Auguste Paris in 1891. The monument represents the deputy of the Convention and revolutionary Georges-Jacques Danton haranguing the people. The statue was commissioned by the city of Paris in 1887, for the commemorations of the centenary of the French Revolution of 1789. A competition was held which resulted in the selection of Auguste Paris's project. The pedestal was made by the architect Alexandre Lépouzé. The monument is located in the 6th arrondissement of Paris, Place Henri-Mondor at 97 boulevard Saint-Germain. Georges Jacques Danton (1759 – 1794) was a leading figure in the French Revolution. A modest and unknown lawyer on the eve of the Revolution, Danton became a famous orator of the Cordeliers Club and was raised to governmental responsibilities as the French Minister of Justice following the fall of the monarchy on the tenth of August 1792, and was allegedly responsible for inciting the September Massacres. He was tasked by the National Convention to intervene in the military conquest of Belgium led by French General Dumouriez. And in the Spring of 1793, he supported the foundation of a Revolutionary Tribunal and became the first president of the Committee of Public Safety. The dies for the medal were engraved by the firm of Victor Janvier (1852-1911) as indicated by the signature on both sides. Janvier was an important figure in the world of medals and coins: he developed an advanced pantograph machine that engraved a die for medal striking based on an oversized clay or plaster model, while simultaneously reducing it to the proper size. His pantograph machine was patented in 1899 and became widely adopted in many countries, as at the Paris Mint, the London Mint, and the Philadelphia Mint. He operated a die-cutting and medal striking business with a partner, called Duval & Janvier, and a second business that sold his machines, which became known as Janvier, Berchot & Cie. after his death in 1911.
