Balmaceda Description This is a crisp uncirculated, long obsolete, "Diez" or 10 Escudos note from the "Banco Central de Chile". These were issued between 1967 and 1975. In 1960 Chile had changed from "Pesos" to "Escudos" at the rate of 1000 Pesos to 1 Escudo. In 1975 they went back to Pesos. "Standard Catalog of World Paper Money" (Modern Issues 1960-) by Albert Pick. #143. Face: A 4 • 0798525 • Grayish-brown on tan underprint. • Jose Manuel Balmaceda, the 10th President of Chile. He served from 1886 until 1891. • Watermark: D. Diego Portales. Back: “Abrazo de Maipu”. • Printed by the Casa de Moneda, Chile. The “Battle of Maipu” was fought near Santiago, Chile on April 5, 1818, between South American rebels and Spanish royalists, during the “Chilean War of Independence”. The rebels, led by Argentine General José de San Martín effectively destroyed the Spanish forces. The Note: A crisp uncirculated note. It has a couple of light bends but no folds, edge or body tears and no pinholes. The note will be sent in a new currency holder that protects it.
