Description: 1980 MOSCOW SUMMER OLYMPIC GAMES - Greco Roman Wrestling souvenir pin - This 1" x 1" souvenir pin was sold to fans and spectators of the Greco Roman wrestling competitions at the 19th occurrence of the modern Olympic Games, the 1980 Summer Olympic Games, held July 19 - August 3, in Moscow. The Soviet Union's invasion of Afghanistan in December 1979 led to the largest boycott in the history of the Olympic Games. U.S. President Jimmy Carter took the lead in the call for a boycott of the 1980 Olympics, and 60 other countries joined the United States in staying away from Moscow. Some Western countries did not observe the boycott, most notably Great Britain, France, Italy, and Sweden. In all, 5,000 athletes representing 81 countries did attend the Games. Protests against the Soviet presence in Afghanistan continued, however. Several of the participating countries refused to attend the opening ceremony, and the Olympic hymn was played at several medal ceremonies, rather than appropriate national anthems. The Games were also hurt by rowdy behavior from spectators, cheating by officials, and security so intrusive that winners in track events were physically prevented from taking any victory laps. Now you can own an original souvenir pin sold to wrestling event spectators at this unusual 1980 gathering of Olympic athletes. Shipment to continental United States addresses only.
