The end of the lace (or ribbon) is inserted into the aglet, which has an inbuilt shrinking action when heat is applied, and they will typically shrink down to about half their initial diameter. Hair straighteners, a naked flame or boiling water are all viable heat applications to shrink them although more information will be sent with your order.
