Description: Napoleon III RARE Miniature Jewelry Box by Jean-Pierre-Alexandre Tahan, Paris An exceptionally fine 160 year old miniature coffer crafted of exotic materials to the highest standards by the most prestigious Paris ebeniste with royal patronage. Ideal for precious contents! The dome top is framed with cast brass beadwork. An elaborate hand cut and engraved brass over shell foliated scrollwork cartouche embellishes the cream ground with triple border of brass and shell stringing. Corners of the cover and box are shell veneered. The top mounts on an inset 7-knuckle piano hinge, opening with push-button to a rich ebony interior. The closure plate is engraved "TAHAN Fr du ROI." The Tahan workshop produced furniture and small articles, including beautiful wooden boxes and bronze jewelry caskets. Among the most costly; pieces incorporating brass and tortoiseshell marquetry inspired by Andre-Charles Boulle. Evidencing obsessive adherence to detail - note aligned slots of blued steel screws securing the hinge and male closure plate! Alexandre Tahan (1830-1880) was the official master cabinetmaker to Emperor Napoleon III and the Empress Eugénie. Known for her impeccable taste, the Empress enjoyed a reputation as a trendsetter and favored the workshop Tahan. Atelier Tahan was located at 30 Rue de La Paix from 1849 and subsequently from 1878 at Boulevard des Italiens. Tahan's work was shown at The London Crystal Palace Exhibition in 1851 and the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1855; on both occasions awarded medals. Remarkably well preserved & original throughout. Professionally cleaned and polished to a warm luster. Kindly study close-up images and review descriptive information for condition concerns. - conscientiously packed and shipped worldwide -
