Description: Sequoiadendron giganteum - Giant Sequoia - 14 to 18 inches tall Mature Height: 200 feet, 60-80 feet in landscapes Aspect: full sun to mostly sun Hardiness Zone: USDA 6-8 A gorgeous tree that quickly grows very dense foliage in a pyramidal/conical form without any pruning. Closely related to the Giant Coast Redwood, this Sierra Redwood grows in California's Sierra Mountains and so is adapted to significantly colder winters and hotter summers than the Coast Redwood. There are very few trees growing in the wild, in fact the National Park Service has an actual count of every known tree in its range. However, this species doesn't require very many trees to attract attention as some of those at the Giant Sequoia National Park are nearly 3,000 years old and stand around 280 feet tall, with trunk diameters of over 30 feet. 30 feet is more than it sounds, that diameter can be matched by five people six feet tall laying head to feet in a line! Luckily, this fantastic tree can be grown in medium sized landscapes because, although it will always be a large tree, it doesn't reach excessive sizes until several hundred years. Just be careful not to plant this tree right against buildings or power lines that will cause headaches a generation or two from now. Here in the Rogue Valley, this is a very common tree seen in various parks, roadways, and home gardens (in fact there is an excellent 100' tall specimen across the street from our nursery) and is popular because of its strong wood, fast growth and large trunk diameter. Giant Sequoias are significantly more heat and drought tolerant than Coast Redwoods (being native to inland Northern California, it has to be!). As a real-world test for drought and heat tolerance there is a stand of trees growing in a rest stop not far from our nursery in Southern Oregon that has thrived with no intervention since planting. Trees planted on either side of a road. Shipping Information Your plants are wrapped in bundles in plastic bags and strapped in place in their shipping boxes and are mailed using either USPS or UPS. Most states require that all the soil be washed away from the roots for field grown plants which also gives us the opportunity to trim the roots into good form. The tops are pruned as needed depending on the species and size of the tree. Our handling time is 1-3 business days occasionally we skip the day before a holiday since plants will be sitting at the post office anyway.
