Description: Lee Friedlander's first self-published work of photography, Self Portrait (1970) is a seminal piece of American photographic history. One of the most important books to come from the new school of photography (post-Robert Frank and Evans, especially), Self Portrait is at the forefront of modern movements in American photography. This book is important for its early signature, and also its accompanying holograph. This book looks good. It has definitely been handled, and with good reason: The book is signed to David Stuart, the Los Angeles gallery owner, to whom it appears the photographer would like to have struck up a friendship. Most importantly, there is a loose holograph on note paper (in good shape with a small fold to the bottom left corner), including Friedlander's phone number and travel plans, wherein he tells Stuart he hopes to see him again. An interesting addition to the signed book at an early point in Friedlander's career. A unique item for a central photographer just setting out to remake the world of photography with his colleagues including Arbus and Winograd.
