Description: A Rare and Exquisite Nanshan Ware Raku-style 'Dove' Incense Container, Meiji Period (1868-1912), JapanH6.8 x W9 x D6 cmBase Mark: Yahata NanzanIncludes a original collector's wood box Nanzan ware (南山焼) is a type of pottery believed to have been founded by Asai Shūsai during the mid-Edo period. This particular piece bears the mark "Yahata Nanzan" on its base, indicating that it is a product of the revived Nanzan ware, likely dating from the Meiji to Taisho era. Asai Shūsai (浅井周斎) was born in Yahata and is the founder of the legendary Nanzan ware (Nanzanyaki). Shūsai, born in the 5th year of the Kyōhō era (1720) during the reign of Tokugawa Yoshimune, amassed a fortune as a merchant dealing in iron in Osaka, reportedly accumulating as much as 20,000 ryō. However, in his later years, he abandoned this business and settled at the foot of Mount Otoko (Otokoyama). His life in Yahata was dedicated to the practice of the Lotus Sutra, as well as pursuits in the tea ceremony and Chinese-style poetry (shigin). Shūsai’s greatest passion, however, was pottery. He built a kiln in Nanzan, Yahata, where he created pottery, inscribing the character "mu" (無, meaning "nothingness") on the bases of his works, which became known as Nanzan ware. His creations were highly esteemed, praised as "elegant and refined, making a significant mark in the world of ceramics." After Shūsai's death, Nanzan ware gradually faded from memory. However, at the end of the Meiji period, the pottery was revived by Obiyama Yobei (帯山与兵衛), a potter of Kiyomizu ware. His works became popular as souvenirs for the growing number of tourists following the opening of the Keihan Electric Railway on April 15, 1910.
