Description: NEWFOUNDLAND 167 1929 5c SLATE GREEN STEAM LOCOMOTIVE TRAIN P13.5x13.5 VF MPH Please read the TERMS OF SALE below prior to bidding. BID WITH CONFIDENCE - SATISFACTION GUARANTEED NEWFOUNDLAND 167 1929 5c SLATE GREEN STEAM LOCOMOTIVE TRAIN P13.5x13.5 VF MPH Five cent 'Express Train', slate green from the re-engraved 1929 'Labrador Publicity' issue, engraved, no watermark. Perf. 13.5x13.5 (total of 11 perf varieties in this issue recorded to date, 5 of the 5 cent value). Printed on heavy weight, white wove paper with horizontal mesh, whitish (almost colorless) gum. Approximately 40% of original gum disturbed by previous hinging, hinge remnant. Sound, fault-free example of this Newfoundland stamp. From the magnificant book "NEWFOUNDLAND POSTAGE STAMP DESIGNS" by Cliff Brown: "The 5c "Express Crossing Newfoundland" image was based on a 1909 photograph by St. John's photographer James Vey (1852-1922). His original photo shows the train moving to the left whereas the stamp shows it moving to the right. Reversing an image was a common practice for engravers since it eliminated the need of a mirror during the engraving process." The "Newfoundland Express" was owned by the Newfoundland Railway and was used to carry freight, mail, and passengers between St. John's and Port aux Basques on the southwest coast to link up with steamer service to Sydney, Nova Scotia. In 1927, the British Privy Council, over Canada's objection on behalf of Quebec, confirmed the Dominion of Newfoundland's historical claim to Labrador. Newfoundland used the reward to publicize it's significantly enlarged landmass through a new series of stamps that hopefully would encourage additional tourism and economic development. The first of 3 series of stamps known as the "Publicity" or "Pictorial" (sometimes "Newfoundland-Labrador") issues were printed in 1928 by De La Rue and Company of London. Soon after this printing, De La Rue lost it's contract to John Dickson and Company but refused to turn over the engraving plates to the new contractor. John Dickson then asked Perkins, Bacon and Company to produce "re-engraved" plates of most of the 1928 images which were subsequently used to print the 2nd Publicity stamp series in 1929-1931 and the 3rd Publicity issue in July of 1931. Paper watermarked with the Newfoundland 'Coat of Arms' was used for the first time in the printing of the 3rd Publicity issue. Images should provide all the information necessary to make a reasonably intelligent bid on this lot. I am confident that a mutually satisfactory solution can be worked out to any problem that might develop. Please give me a chance to fix something that is not satisfactory to you before leaving negative feedback. Although 3 and 4 star DSR scores may be considered "good" by just about any reasonable standard, they aren't as far as ebay is concerned. Anything but 5 ratings in a seller's DSR score may impact their ability to offer items for sale on ebay. Therefore, having an opportunity to earn your highest rating would be very much appreciated. Thank you for your consideration. TERMS OF SALE SHIPPING/HANDLING/INSURANCE: FREE WORLDWIDE SHIPPING PAYMENT: payment by PayPal only. Please don't hesitate to contact me through the "Ask Seller A Question" link on eBay if you have questions concerning a lot. Due to a proliferation of fake eBay email messages, I will not respond to questions sent directly to my email address.
