The invasion of the Warsaw Pact troops into Czechoslovakia, also referred to by the communist party as the entry of allied troops, with the code name: Danube operation, was a military invasion by the troops of the five socialist countries of the Warsaw Pact (Soviet Union, Hungary, Poland, Bulgaria and GDR) led by the Soviet Union, which meant the following 23-year military occupation of the Czechoslovak territory, the halting and reversal of ongoing democratization reforms. On Wednesday, August 21, 1968, foreign troops occupied most of the strategic places throughout Czechoslovakia (they entered the territory of the Czechoslovakia on Tuesday, August 20, before midnight, and on August 21, at 2:00 a.m., the first airborne unit landed at Ruzyn Airport in Prague). About half a million soldiers and about 6,000 tanks took part in the operation. The operation was commanded by Soviet army general I. G. Pavlovsky.Leading Czech-Slovak representatives Dubcek, Smrkovsky, Cernik and others were arrested and interned. During the first week, the public expressed strong opposition to such a procedure, the so-called "friendly" countries. Protests took place, which led to street fights in several places, but the Czechoslovak The army, on the order of Minister Dzur and then President Svoboda, did not intervene in the fighting. It was a military occupation of a sovereign country at that time by its allies, despite the disapproval of its legally elected representatives and requests for help from other countries, including at the UN Security Council. However, the leaders quickly gave in under pressure and by signing the Moscow Protocol on August 27, 1968 in a joint statement legalized the presence of foreign troops, which subsequently meant the suppression of the Czech-Slovak attempt at "socialism with a human face", the so-called of the "revival" process known in the world as the Prague Spring. During the invasion, 108 Czechs and Slovaks were killed in skirmishes with intervention units or as a result of accidents. 29 people lost their lives in Slovakia, one Slovak (19-year-old Milan Lamper) also died in clashes around the radio building in Prague on the first day of the invasion, and a Slovak (Anna Trechova) near Brno. The invasion resulted in a large wave of emigration abroad. In the following period, about 450,000 people emigrated.Invasion troops of the Soviet Army remained in the country until 1991 (Wiki).
