The strategic intention of the Red Army was that the 2nd Ukrainian Front under the command of Marshal Rodion Malinovsky would attack Brno and from there continue to Vyskov, Prostejov and Olomouc. From the north, the 4th Ukrainian Front of General Andrei Yeremenko was supposed to liberate Ostrava. By uniting the troops of the 2nd and 4th Ukrainian Fronts on the territory of Moravia, the pincers were to be closed and the German units encircled in western Slovakia and in the area of the Moravian-Slovak border.During the offensive, Soviet forces suffered losses of almost 17,000 dead. Soviet sources state that they destroyed nine German divisions. The offensive created the conditions for the Prague operation because it made it possible to bypass the center of the army group from the south. A Czechoslovak special purpose company was also attached to the Soviet 53rd Army. Its sole purpose was to occupy and secure buildings in Brno for the needs of the Czechoslovak government. Due to the quick end of the war, however, the government moved from Bratislava directly to Prague on May 10. President Edvard Benes spent almost a week in liberated Brno (Wiki).
