Description: OUTSTANDING ALFRED HAIR (1941-1970) FLORIDA HIGHWAYMEN OIL/UPSON TRIPTYCH, WATER HYACINTH Here’s a one-of-a-kind, investment quality triptych from the most influential Highwaymen Alfred Hair who was one of the few formally trained artists from this group. Hair was taught by the famous Florida Impressionist A. E. Backus and originated the “fast painting” method of creating spontaneous, wildly colorful and luminous paintings of southeastern Florida. This set of 3 oils are all original, perfectly preserved in exceptional untouched condition, painted on “orange peel” upson board and in their original moulded wood frames. They have not been varnished nor shellacked as some “dealers” have unfortunately done with these highly collectible Highwaymen paintings. These 3 are totally fresh to the marketplace as I’m only the 2nd owner of them. They have never been offered before and are being sold exclusively on ebay. Like all items I sell, they are solely owned by me. I’ve found similar iconic Florida landscapes with cranes flying off into the distance pictured in Highwaymen books which indicate that the St. Lucie River, with all its areas of water hyacinths, is the subject matter here. These 3 images appear to be painted at either late sunrise or early sunset when the ubiquitous billowy and wispy clouds that float over the interior of southern Florida are a beautiful flamingo pink. The large painting would then be looking due East or due West over the St. Lucie with the side panels looking NorthEast and SouthEast or NorthWest and SouthWest depending on whether Hair painted the sun rising or setting. This would make perfect sense when viewing the triptych as the brightest clouds would be adjacent to the sun, whereas the darker cloud cover would be furthest from the sun along the horizon (seen as the darker pink clouds in the 2 smaller paintings). I purchased them directly from the estate of the woman (her daughter) who purchased them directly from the artist Alfred Hair in 1967 in the vicinity of West Palm Beach, Florida. Hair regularly sold his paintings by traveling along this stretch of Route 1 near where she reportedly worked at Florida or First National Bank in Lake Worth in the 1960s. She retired from there in 1972. I will provide more details on the original owner and the story behind the paintings upon purchase. This is a rare and extraordinary set of paintings by the premier Highwaymen artist, Alfred Hair. The paintings are so much better in person than the pictures shown here as the coloration is richer and there’s a 3-dimensional depth to the thickly painted touches. A singular and similar, but inferior 24” x 36” painting of the St. Lucie, sold for $12,000.00 last year (includes buyers premium). To my knowledge, this is the only Hair triptych known to exist. I have one posted photo of a book page showing the similarity of the St. Lucie River area painting to these I’m selling. Largest measures approximately 24”x 36” (28” x 40” in original frame). Each of the smaller two measure approximately 24” x 12” (28” x 16” framed). All three frames match. As was characteristic of Hair’s paintings, like the upson board used to paint on, these frames were made of repurposed material such as crown moulding. Even this moulding was made painterly by Hair’s streaks of color added in matching hues to the painting. Hair’s Largest painting is signed lower right. One of the smaller ones is signed lower left and the other lower right. Circa 1960s. Everything guaranteed as stated. FREE shipping with full insurance in only 48 states.
