VICTORIAN 1890’S TAN SILK TAFFETA PUFF SLEEVE BUSTLE DRESS

Description: THIS PIECE WAS FOUND IN A LEGIT CASTLE IN SARDINIA ITALY ALONG WITH OTHER PIECES BEING OFFERED THIS WEEK. DATING TO THE 1890’S TWO PIECE IN CONSTRUCTION FASHIONED OF A TAN SILK TAFFETA. STITCHED DETAILING RUNS DOWN EACH SIDE OF THE FRONT CLOSURE WITH CROSSING SASHES ON THE FRONT WITH A SMALL RUFFLING AT THE TOP. BAND COLLAR AT THE NECKLINE WITH RUFFLING AT THE ARM SEAMS AND ROUNDING THE REAR. SLEEVES ARE IN A PUFF FULLNESS WITH A RUFFLE AT ELBOW LEVEL AND INNER SLEEVE TRIMMED IN A SILK GROSGRAIN BOW. MATCHING GROSGRAIN WITH BOWS TRIMS THE BOTTOM OF EACH SLEEVE WITH A CLUNY LACE FINISH. REAR IS CUT WITH A BUSTLE TAIL HOOK AND EYES CLOSE THE FRONT WITH GLAZED COTTON LINING AND IS FULLY BONED WITH AN UNLABELED INNER PETERSHAM BELTING. THE SKIRT IS IN FULL VOLUME AND HOOKS CLOSED IN THE REAR WITH RUFFLING AT THE BOTTOM EDGE. POLISHED COTTON FULLY LINES THE INTERIOR WITH A BOTTOM WOOL BINDING. CONDITION: SOLD AS IT WAS ACQUIRED. THERE ARE TWO THUMBPRINTS OF BROWN STAINING ON THE CENTER FRONT SKIRTING, NOTE THE IMAGES. THERE IS A VERY FAINT LIGHT BROWN AGE SPOTTING SEEN TO THE SKIRT IF EXAMINED INTENSELY BUT IS VERY HARD TO NOTE OTHERWISE. ONLY WHEN STUDIED, THERE ARE PIN PRICK HOLES ABOVE THE RUFFLE ON THE SKIRTING AND I SUSPECT IT WAS ONCE TRIMMED IN MATCHING SILK AND LACE. THE BODICE HAS HEAVY STAINING SEEN BENEATH THE ARMS WITH CREASING TO THE SILK. SMALL TRACE STITCHING IS SEEN ALONG THE SASH FRONT AND THE FRONT PLACQUARD WHERE LACE WAS REMOVED. SOME WATER STAINING IS SEEN TO THE PUFF SLEEVES WITH SOME SOILED STAINING ACROSS THE REAR CENTER BACK. STRONG AND WEARABLE, A GREAT PIECE FOR RESTORATION.
