Description: This vintage Navajo blanket/rug is made from all-natural Churro wool of the natural cream white and brown/black of the sheep. This blanket/rug is old but is in pristine shape for it’s age and soft enough to be used as a blanket. The ends are slightly stretched as that gives a sign of being worn by it’s owner. One photo shows the blanket hung up outdoor. It is back lighted by the sun to show through the blanket. A few areas where there are lazy lines shows more light through it, but it’s just kind of an X-ray view but it is not worn at all, it just appears that way. There is no fading whatsoever. There are photos of both sides. The cross design was most prominently used in the "classic" period of Navajo weaving, which generally spans from the early 1800’s to around 1863 with the cross motif often being associated with the symbol of Spider Woman, a significant figure in Navajo culture; the early blankets often featured cross designs as a primary motif, particularly before the mid-19th century when there became a more complex design that emerged due to increased trade with the settlers and access to new colors of yarn and dye. The 4 corners tassels of this blanket have been replaced and several broken edging strings in various areas were also replaced. These are very minor details for this old style Navajo blanket/rug. In the category of rug, this is very pliable and most likely used as wearing or rug use for a doorway, etc. It is generally agreed that the origin of the craft is categorized into six periods of development; the Pueblo Period (1700-1850), Classic Period (1850-1863), Transition Period (1868-1890), Rug Period (1890-1920), Revival Period (1920-1940) and the Regional Style Period (1940-present).
